In a swift operation, the Yelahanka New Town Police have apprehended a cab driver, Nandish (35), residing in Rajanukunte, for the theft of diamonds, gold, and other jewelry valued at Rs 30 lakhs. The victim, Chennai-based businesswoman Uma Reddy, had traveled to the city for a family wedding. Uma Reddy, a prominent businesswoman, had recently arrived in Yelahanka to attend a relative’s wedding, where she was staying at the Clariet Hotel in the outskirts of the city. She had hired Nandish’s cab to transport her from the hotel to the Kempegowda airport after the wedding festivities. The unfortunate incident occurred when Uma Reddy, having completed the wedding ceremony, returned to the hotel to collect her luggage and a suitcase containing her precious jewelry. She briefly went inside the hotel to return her room key. During this short absence, Nandish allegedly took advantage of the situation and pilfered the gold jewelry, weighing 485 grams, and diamond jewelry, amounting to 17.5 carats, from her suitcase. Upon her return to Chennai, Uma Reddy discovered the theft and promptly informed her local relatives about the incident. She made repeated attempts to contact the cab driver but received no response, fueling her suspicions. Eventually, she reported the theft to the police, detailing the unfortunate turn of events. The police, acting swiftly on Uma Reddy’s complaint, launched an investigation and apprehended Nandish. During the course of interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. As a result, the stolen gold and diamond jewelry, valued at Rs 30 lakhs, were successfully recovered. The arrest of the cab driver provides some solace to the victim, who had suffered a significant loss during her visit to the city.
