The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is actively considering the introduction of a UPI-based payment method to simplify ticket purchases for bus passengers. To pave the way for this convenience, the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has initiated a trial run of UPI-based payments, with the potential for a wider rollout across all KSRTC buses in the future. In this experimental phase, which commenced last Friday, passengers will have the option to scan a Quick Response (QR) code to complete their payments. While public transport authorities have long sought to implement UPI-based payment solutions to enhance the travel experience for commuters, progress has been hindered by issues such as unreliable internet connectivity and technical glitches. The initiative comes in response to instances where passengers have been disembarked from buses for failing to provide the exact fare when purchasing tickets. This practice has led to concerns about the convenience and dignity of passengers. Purushothaman Siva, a regular KSRTC passenger, has questioned whether forcing passengers to disembark in the absence of accurate change is an affront to their dignity. He points out that even street vendors, such as pushcart vegetable sellers and roadside pani puri vendors, now offer UPI payment options, highlighting the need for government buses to modernize and meet the expectations of passengers. KSRTC Managing Director, Anbu Kumar, confirmed that they are actively exploring the possibility of introducing UPI-based payments. Drawing inspiration from the NWKRTC’s trial run, KSRTC is studying the feasibility of implementing this payment method across its four corporations. While challenges remain, including addressing connectivity issues and technical hurdles, the move towards UPI-based ticketing represents a step forward in improving the convenience and efficiency of public transportation in Karnataka.
