In a significant cybercrime bust, authorities have apprehended an individual from Tamil Nadu for concocting a fake social media account that closely resembled the official Bengaluru police account on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The suspect, identified as Magesh Kumar, was taken into custody after an investigation led by the Central Crime Branch (CCB). Kumar had devised an imitation X account with the handle @BlrCityPolicee, which strikingly resembled the legitimate account of the Bengaluru police, @BlrCityPolice. This deceitful account was being exploited to propagate misinformation and cast a negative light on the reputation of the police department. Taking swift action, an FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bengaluru on April 28. The CCB promptly assembled a dedicated team equipped with cutting-edge technology to track down the culprit. Subsequently, Magesh Kumar was apprehended in Chettupattu. The charges against Kumar encompass Sections 66C (pertaining to the punishment for identity theft) and 66D (pertaining to the punishment for cheating through personation via computer resources) of the Information Technology Act, as well as Section 419 (related to the punishment for cheating through personation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This successful operation underscores the resolve of law enforcement to tackle cybercrime and safeguard the integrity of digital platforms.
