The Indian women’s hockey team embarked on its journey to participate in the Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier on Wednesday. The tournament is scheduled to take place from August 25 to 28 in Salalah, Oman. India has been placed in the Elite Pool, competing alongside Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. Additionally, the Challengers Pool includes teams such as Hong Kong China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iran, and Oman. The team, under the leadership of captain Navjot Kaur and vice-captain Jyoti, includes goalkeeper Bansari Solanki. The defensive lineup comprises Akshata Abaso Dhekale, Mahima Chaudhary, and Sonia Devi Kshetrimayum. Captain Navjot and Ajmina Kujur will hold the midfield area, while Mariana Kujur, Jyoti, and Dipi Monika Toppo will play as forwards. India’s objective is to secure a top-two position in their pool and advance to the semifinals. Their campaign commences with a match against Malaysia on August 25, followed by encounters with Japan on August 26 and Thailand on August 27. Coach Soundarya Yendala shared her excitement about the upcoming tournament: We are eager to kick-start the competition. The Women’s Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier demanded substantial preparation, and our goal is to consistently perform well throughout the tournament, with the ultimate aim of clinching victory. Team captain Navjot expressed confidence in the team’s ability to succeed in the qualifier: Despite facing formidable opponents in our pool, our extensive preparations have bolstered our readiness for this tournament. I am optimistic that we will put forth our best effort and return with medals, she affirmed.
