Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy secured his first-ever world high jump title with a thrilling performance at the World Athletics Championships. Tamberi, who previously won joint Olympic gold, made a first-time clearance at 3.36m, setting a world lead and claiming the gold medal on Tuesday. Olympic finalist JuVaughan Harrison, after a failed first attempt, managed to clear the height on his second try to secure the silver medal, marking his first global medal. The bronze medal was awarded to Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim. In the men’s 3,000 meters steeplechase, Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali, the Olympic gold medallist, clinched his second consecutive world championship title by fending off the challenge from world record holder and Olympic silver medallist Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia. El Bakkali completed the race in 8 minutes, 3.53 seconds. Girma secured his fourth consecutive global silver with a time of 8:05.44, while Commonwealth Games champion Abraham Kibiwot claimed the bronze, edging out his teammate Leonard Kipkemoi Bett with a time of 8:11.98. In the women’s 1500m, Faith Kipyegon dominated the track race from start to finish to retain her world title in an event where she had already set the world record this year. Kipyegon’s unchallenged performance led her to victory in 3:54.87. Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji secured the second position with a time of 3:55.69. Despite facing disappointment in the 10,000m event due to a fall just meters before the finish line, Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan claimed the bronze medal in the 1500m with a time of 3:56.00.
