For the country to develop, everyone has to be physically and mentally healthy. For this purpose, the government is providing nutritious food to school children, said Social Welfare and District In-charge Minister Dr. HC Mahadevappa. He was speaking after launching a scheme to distribute eggs twice a week to students of classes 1 to 10 in Government and Aided schools under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme by feeding eggs, bananas and groundnut chikki to the children of Maharaja’s Government High School.
As a child, we didn’t get three meals a day. In the days of poverty, we used to eat with salt and chillies along with ragi balls. No one should live in hunger. Our Government has implemented many programmes with the aim of creating a hunger free society. Last year, only students of classes 1 to 8 in Government and Aided schools were given eggs, bananas or groundnut chikkis for 46 days annually. But our Government will provide nutritious food to students of classes 1 to 10 for 80 days annually in the current year.
There are a total of 2,228 schools in the district, out of which 2,064 are Government, 258 Aided schools and students of classes 1 o 10 of Maulana Azad Model 6 schools will be covered under this scheme. Out of the total 2,12,646 students, 1,65,794 students of Government, and 46,852 of Aided schools are being given supplementary nutrition twice a week.
MLA Tanveer Sait, MLC Marithibbegowda, CN Manjegowda and other officials and staff of the Education Department were present.
