Textile Minister Shivanand Patil highlighted the urgent need to support and promote the handloom industry, which is facing challenges due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation.
While inaugurating the Haathkarga Handloom Fair at the Institute of Engineers, Patil stated that the event was organised to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Indian handloom sector and to acknowledge the resilience of weavers who continue despite significant obstacles. He noted that handloom artisans have been vital in preserving India’s history and traditions through their craftsmanship, enhancing the country’s cultural legacy with their beautiful works.
The minister urged the public to support the industry by purchasing handloom products. He mentioned that the state government has allocated Rs 31 lakh to 44 handloom weavers’ cooperative societies under the Mitavyaya Nidhi Yojana for 2024-2025, and Rs 54 lakh to 15 societies through the 20% concession scheme.
Patil also highlighted that under the Nekar Samman Yojana, Rs 22 crore will be distributed to 44,000 handloom weavers, providing Rs 5,000 each, and Rs 50 crore allocated for one lakh power loom weavers.
Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation MD Varneet Negi, divisional joint director Shivaraj Kulkarni, Ramanand Kulkarni, and others attended the event. The expo features 62 stalls showcasing handloom products, including 10 reserved for artisans from other states. Participants from nine districts are displaying their work, and the event will run until November 14, officials confirmed.
