80 waste-free spots transformed under ID Day sanitation drive

As part of the “Independence Day Sanitation Campaign–2026: 80 Waste-Free Spots” launched by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to mark the 80th Independence Day, several garbage accumulation points and an open urination spot across the city were cleaned up and transformed into neat, attractive public spaces in Mysuru on Monday.
At Zone–2, Ward–60 in Krishnamurthypuram, near the Ananthaswamy Park close to Nityotsava Kalyana Mantapa, around 60 people participated in the cleanliness drive and cleared nearly 6 tonnes of waste. Former Mayor Purushotham, former corporators, Zone Assistant Commissioner Girish, Assistant Executive Engineer Meenakshi, MCC officials and staff, and local residents took part in the operation.
At the T. Narasipura Main Road in Zone–9, around 30 people joined the drive and removed approximately 2 tonnes of waste. Executive Engineer (East), Zone–9 officials and staff, and local residents participated.
At another location in the same zone, on the road behind Holy Saint School in Gayathripuram, Ward–39, around 35 people participated and cleared nearly 1 tonne of waste. Environmental engineers, Zone–9 officials and staff, and local residents took part in the operation.
Together, 125 people participated at the three locations and removed nearly 9 tonnes of accumulated waste, giving the neglected spots a cleaner and healthier look.
Open urination spot transformed
As part of the same campaign, a spot on Sayyaji Rao Road, which had been used by the public for open urination, was completely cleaned and transformed. The walls were freshly painted and public-awareness messages and signboards were installed to discourage unhygienic practices. Flower pots were placed to beautify the area, while the operating hours of the nearby public toilet were extended for the convenience of citizens.
MCC Commissioner Savita M.K., Executive Engineer Mrityunjaya K.S., Zone–6 Assistant Commissioner Pratibha, Environmental Engineer Maitri, Health Inspectors Basavaraju and Manjun Kumar, supervisors, pourakarmikas, nearby shopkeepers and street vendors participated in the transformation drive.
Strict vigilance against repeated violations
The Mysuru City Corporation said continuous monitoring would be carried out at the transformed locations to ensure that garbage is not dumped again and that open urination does not recur. The MCC has also warned that heavy fines will be imposed as per rules against those found dumping waste in public places or engaging in open urination.
