Former India cricket captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly has lodged a complaint with Kolkata Police, alleging that a social media page was attempting to tarnish his image through misleading and defamatory content. Based on his complaint, a First Information Report has been registered at Thakurpukur Police Station, initiating a formal investigation into the matter.
According to the complaint, Ganguly accused a Facebook page named Sourav Ganguly Fans of repeatedly sharing content that he believes is intended to damage his public image. He also referred to media platform Sportzwiki in his submission to the authorities. The former cricketer claimed that the posts created a negative impression about him among the public and were designed to harm his reputation.
In his complaint, Ganguly stated that while public figures are accustomed to criticism and differing opinions, there is a clear distinction between legitimate criticism and content that is misleading, defamatory, and intentionally damaging. He emphasized that such actions go beyond acceptable public discourse and warrant legal intervention.
The former Indian captain requested law enforcement authorities to identify the individuals or groups operating the page and take appropriate action under applicable laws. He stressed the need to address online misinformation and defamatory campaigns that can adversely affect an individual’s reputation.
Ganguly remains one of India’s most influential cricket personalities. Widely known by his nickname Dada, he made his Test debut for India against England in 1996 and immediately captured attention with a century at Lord’s. He followed that achievement with another hundred in his second Test match, becoming only the third batter in cricket history to score centuries in each of his first two Test innings.
His leadership qualities came to the forefront during a challenging period for Indian cricket. In 2000, following the match-fixing controversy that shook the sport, Ganguly was appointed captain of the national team. Under his leadership, India underwent a significant transformation, with several young talents being introduced and nurtured at the international level. One of the early highlights of his captaincy was guiding India to the final of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy, marking a significant achievement for the team.
