Lingayat leaders in Vijayapura demand ban on Kaneri Swamiji’s proposed convention, alleging distortion of Basavanna teachings and warning statewide protests if allowed.
Vijayapura
The district unit of the Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha has urged the Karnataka government to stop the proposed “Basavadi Sharanara Hindu Convention” and restrict the entry of Kaneri Kadasiddheshwar Swamiji into the state, alleging that his statements have hurt Basava followers.
Addressing a press conference in Vijayapura on Saturday, district president Basavanagouda Haranal claimed that the Swamiji had made remarks and interpretations that allegedly distort the vachanas of Basavanna and insult the teachings of the Sharanas. He said such actions have caused strong resentment among Lingayat communities.
The leaders alleged that the proposed convention is inconsistent with the philosophy of Basavanna and could create social and ideological confusion. They warned that if such programmes are permitted, Lingayat organisations would stage protests across multiple districts in Karnataka.
Speaking at the press meet, National President of the Rashtriya Basava Sena, Dr. Ravikumar Biradar, said Basavanna established a distinct philosophical path by rejecting several practices associated with orthodox traditions. He termed the proposed convention inappropriate, alleging it attempts to mix different religious ideas in a way that distorts Basava philosophy.
He further alleged that despite organising events in Basavanna’s name, the Swamiji has not actively promoted Basava Jayanti or the core teachings of Basavanna at his mutt, calling it contradictory.
The leaders also made political allegations, claiming that religious platforms were being used to advance political agendas. They said efforts to link Basavanna’s philosophy with partisan interests were unacceptable.
Another leader, Adiveppa Salagall, warned that any attempt to insult Basavanna or his teachings would be strongly opposed by Basava followers across Karnataka.
Several office-bearers, including Prabhugouda Patil, Chinnu Kattimani and Nagaraj Lambu, were present at the press conference. No response from Kaneri Swamiji or his representatives was immediately available regarding the allegations.
