At Huvinal village in Koppal taluk, a legal awareness program was held at Sri Anjaneya Temple as part of International Labour Day celebrations. The event focused on educating workers about their rights and welfare schemes.
Senior Civil Judge and Member Secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Mahantesh S Dargada, inaugurated program. He said Labour Day should be called Shramayogi Day. He added Basavanna taught work is equal to heaven and Dr B R Ambedkar stressed every person should respect a worker. He said workers are the real strength behind the country’s progress.
Ramesh Ghorpade, president of the Federation of Registered Trade Unions of Kalyana Karnataka districts, said the Labour Department is giving useful facilities that are improving the lives of construction workers and helping them live with dignity.
Labor Inspector Manjula Vishwanath explained history of Labour Day. She said labour movements in Western countries began in 19th century and struggle in Chicago led to eight hour working day in 1886. In India, Labour Day was observed in Chennai in 1937. She informed workers about government schemes and benefits.
Officials explained workers in construction must complete at least 90 days of work in last 12 months to register under Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. Applicants must be aged between 18 and 60 years and provide Aadhaar card, bank passbook and documents linked to their mobile number.
The board offers benefits like marriage aid, maternity support, medical help, accident compensation, education aid and pension. Officials said timely renewal of identity cards is necessary to continue receiving these benefits. Several union leaders and workers attended the program.
