Vijayapura
State Large and Medium Industries and District In-charge Minister M.B. Patil said that the lake and tank filling initiative implemented in Vijayapura district has emerged as a model for effective groundwater utilisation in the country. He stated that the project has significantly improved water storage, recharge, and availability for agriculture and drinking purposes across several taluks.
Speaking at a review meeting on ongoing irrigation and water conservation works, the minister said that Karnataka has prioritised rejuvenation of lakes and filling of tanks as a long-term solution to recurring drought conditions. He noted that Vijayapura, once known for severe water scarcity, is now witnessing improved groundwater levels due to systematic implementation of irrigation and lift water schemes.
Patil said the project involves channeling excess water into traditional tanks and minor reservoirs, ensuring year-round water availability. He added that this approach reduces dependence on borewells and promotes sustainable water use. “The lake filling programme is not just a local solution but a replicable model for the entire country,” he said.
The minister further highlighted that ongoing works under various irrigation projects, including canal networks and lift irrigation systems, have helped bring water to previously dry regions. He instructed officials to ensure timely completion of pending works and maintain quality standards.
He also said that additional steps are being taken to strengthen groundwater recharge structures, desilt existing tanks, and improve distribution efficiency. According to him, coordinated efforts between departments have been key to the success of the initiative.
Officials present at the meeting informed that water levels in several villages have improved, benefiting farmers during summer irrigation cycles. The minister assured continued government support for expanding similar projects in other districts.
