India is accelerating its transition towards clean energy, with a clear roadmap to achieve 500 gigawatts (GW) of installed power capacity by 2030, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Wednesday.

Highlighting the country’s rapid progress, he noted that India has already surpassed several key renewable energy milestones ahead of schedule.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ‘Resilient Futures Summit 2026’ held in the national capital, Pralhad Joshi emphasized that India’s clean energy transformation has gained significant momentum under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He pointed out that the country has already achieved its ambitious target of sourcing 50% of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources, accomplishing this goal five years ahead of its original timeline.

Joshi stated that nearly 30% of India’s electricity generation now comes from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, battery storage, and pumped storage systems. This diversified energy mix has not only strengthened the country’s power infrastructure but also reduced dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Highlighting recent achievements, the minister revealed that during peak demand periods, almost two-thirds of India’s electricity needs were met through renewable energy sources. This milestone reflects both the expansion of generation capacity and improvements in transmission and grid management systems, ensuring efficient distribution of power across regions.

Describing the developments as a major “success story,” Joshi said India is aggressively scaling up its energy capacity to meet future demands. He added that the country is well on track to achieve key energy milestones by 2027, further reinforcing its position as a global leader in clean energy adoption.

The government’s continued focus on renewable energy is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and supporting sustainable economic growth. As India moves forward with its ambitious targets, the clean energy sector is set to remain a cornerstone of its development strategy.
