Spiritual scholar Prasad dies at 87 in Keralam

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Muni Narayana Prasad, the revered head of Narayana Gurukulam and a distinguished interpreter of Sree Narayana Guru’s philosophy.

Thiruvananthapuram
Muni Narayana Prasad passed away at the age of 87, marking the end of a life that seamlessly blended knowledge with humility. Based at the Gurukulam in the Sreenivasapuram area of Varkala in Kerala, he transformed the ashram into both a center of meditation and a hub of intellectual engagement. Through his work, he presented the profound teachings of the Upanishads and Sree Narayana Guru in a simple and accessible manner, making them relevant to modern society.

A spiritual successor to Nataraja Guru and Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati, Prasad led the Gurukulam’s global network while maintaining the simplicity and discipline of a monk. Despite receiving the prestigious Padma Shri, he remained deeply committed to the daily life and routines of the institution, demonstrating that spirituality requires consistent effort and dedication.

Born in 1938 near Thiruvananthapuram, Prasad initially trained and worked as an engineer. However, driven by a deeper spiritual quest, he chose to renounce his professional career. He was initiated into brahmacharya in 1970 and later embraced sannyasa, dedicating himself fully to the study and practice of Advaita philosophy.

A prolific author, Muni Narayana Prasad wrote nearly 200 works in Malayalam and English. His scholarly contributions include widely respected commentaries on major Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. His interpretations of Sree Narayana Guru’s poetry played a significant role in making complex philosophical ideas understandable to a broader audience.

Beyond India, Prasad served as a visiting professor and participated in international forums, sharing his insights across continents, from Moscow to Fiji. At the Gurukulam, he combined intellectual discipline with physical labour, setting a personal example by engaging in routine tasks and instilling a sense of order among his disciples.

Detached from recognition, he accepted honors like the Padma Shri with quiet humility. His enduring legacy lies in translating deep philosophical thought into lived human values that transcend caste, creed, and social divisions. With his passing, Kerala has lost a towering spiritual figure whose contributions enriched both cultural and philosophical discourse.
