JOHANNESBURG
Cricket legend Hashim Amla has thrown his full support behind young sensation Connor Esterhuizen, describing him as the perfect example of a modern-day cricketer. The MI Cape Town batting coach believes the 24-year-old possesses a rare blend of technical skill and raw power that will lead him to international glory. Esterhuizen’s reputation has skyrocketed recently following a “Player of the Series” performance in New Zealand and a fresh IPL contract with the Gujarat Titans.
Amla, who mentored the youngster during their time at the Lions and MI Cape Town, noted that Esterhuizen’s greatest strength is his “mental elasticity.” This quality allows him to switch seamlessly between formats, a difficult task for many. According to Amla, the young batter is exceptionally eager to learn and can filter complex coaching advice to suit his own game. He compared Esterhuizen’s rise to that of England’s Jamie Smith, noting that both players have the technique to survive tough spells and the strength to dominate bowlers.
One of the most valuable aspects of Esterhuizen’s game is his versatility. While he began his career as a finisher, he has recently thrived at the top of the order. Amla suggested that batting at number four might be his ideal position, serving as a vital bridge between the openers and the power-hitters. As South African cricket looks toward a new era, Esterhuizen’s ability to hit long balls while maintaining a solid defense makes him one of the most exciting prospects in the world.
