Wembanyama is unanimous selection as NBA defensive player of the year

San Antonio

Victor Wembanyama has become the first unanimous winner of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, completing a historic milestone after a dominant season anchoring the San Antonio Spurs’ defence.

At just 22 years old, the towering 7-foot-4 centre is also the youngest ever recipient of the award, adding another landmark achievement to his rapidly growing list of accolades.

Wembanyama led the league in blocked shots for a third consecutive season, consistently altering opposition game plans with his rim protection, timing, and ability to cover ground unlike any player in recent memory.

The Spurs star said the toughest challenge was meeting the 65-game eligibility requirement, but expressed pride at securing the honour and becoming the first unanimous DPOY winner in league history.

Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren finished second in the voting, while Detroit’s Ausar Thompson placed third, both earning recognition for their defensive impact during strong seasons for their respective teams.

Wembanyama’s dominance was never seriously questioned throughout the campaign, as opponents repeatedly struggled to score inside against his length, anticipation, and defensive instincts.

Spurs forward Keldon Johnson praised his teammate, calling him the best defensive player in the world and highlighting his relentless work ethic and commitment to improvement.

The French star now joins an elite group of players who have won both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, alongside legends such as David Robinson and Michael Jordan.

His unanimous selection places him among a rare list of NBA award winners, with only a handful of players in history achieving 100 percent voting support across major individual honours.

The award further strengthens Wembanyama’s case for Most Valuable Player consideration, where he is also a finalist alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić.

NBA officials confirmed that Wembanyama’s defensive dominance was reflected across advanced metrics, highlighting his influence not only in blocks but also in deterring shots and controlling defensive spacing.

Despite individual recognition, Wembanyama credited his teammates and coaching staff for creating the system that allowed him to maximise his defensive strengths throughout the season.

He emphasised that basketball remains a team sport, stating that his success is built on collective effort rather than individual brilliance alone.

With multiple awards expected this season, Wembanyama continues to establish himself as one of the most impactful young players in NBA history and a cornerstone of the Spurs’ long-term future as they build around his generational defensive presence.
