WASHINGTON DC
A tragic shooting at the historic Teotihuacan pyramids has left a Canadian tourist dead and at least 13 others injured. The incident occurred at the world-famous archaeological site near Mexico City. According to Mexico’s security cabinet, an unidentified man opened fire near the Pyramid of the Moon before taking his own life.
The attack turned the ancient “City of the Gods” into a scene of chaos. While some victims were struck by gunfire, others were injured in the desperate rush to escape as shots echoed through the monuments. Eight people remained hospitalized as of recently. Authorities recovered a handgun, a knife, and live ammunition from the scene. Canada’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of one citizen and noted that another Canadian was among the wounded.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her deep grief over the violence at the UNESCO World Heritage site, which attracts millions of visitors annually. She has ordered a full federal investigation and confirmed that her administration is working closely with the Canadian Embassy to support the victims’ families.
Videos on social media captured the terrifying moments as visitors fled the Pyramid of the Moon, a site usually known for its spiritual and historical significance. Federal and state authorities have increased security at the site, which sits about 50 km northeast of Mexico City. As the investigation continues, officials are working with multiple foreign embassies to assist other international tourists caught in the crossfire.
