Nepal tightens action on Indian vehicle violations

Kathmandu

Authorities in Nepal have launched a crackdown on Indian-registered vehicles operating illegally in the Madhesh province, which shares a long open border with India.

According to officials, the enforcement drive targets vehicles that have not completed customs procedures or have overstayed their permitted duration in Nepal. Security agencies have also been directed to collect detailed data on the number of such vehicles operating across border districts.

Police officials said strict action is being taken against vehicles found violating customs regulations, stressing that compliance is necessary for both revenue and security reasons. Customs authorities noted that Indian vehicles entering border markets are typically issued short-duration permits, and longer use requires payment of applicable duties.

However, officials estimate that thousands of Indian-registered vehicles are currently operating in violation of rules across Madhesh province, highlighting widespread non-compliance.

The crackdown has triggered political debate within Nepal. Several political parties have opposed the restrictions, arguing that they could disrupt cross-border mobility and local economic activity. Some groups have also called for restoring earlier relaxed border movement arrangements that allowed easier vehicle access within a defined radius.

At the same time, concerns have been raised about the affordability of vehicles, which has reportedly led some residents to register vehicles in India while continuing to use them in Nepal, contributing to regulatory challenges.

Former provincial leaders have warned that any strict enforcement measures must consider the deep social and economic ties between communities on both sides of the border, cautioning against steps that could strain bilateral relations.

Officials maintain that the current action is aimed at ensuring proper regulation, revenue collection, and legal compliance in cross-border vehicle movement.
