IPL 2026: Kaif questions KKR’s Russell decision amid winless run

Kolkata

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has criticised Kolkata Knight Riders’ team strategy in IPL 2026, suggesting the franchise may have erred by shifting Andre Russell into a “power coach” role while investing heavily in Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. His comments came after KKR suffered yet another defeat, a 32-run loss to Chennai Super Kings, leaving them winless this season.

Kolkata Knight Riders have endured a disappointing start to their campaign, managing only one point from a washed-out match against Punjab Kings. Losses against Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, and Chennai Super Kings have left the side rooted at the bottom of the table and under growing scrutiny.

Kaif, reacting to the situation on social media, questioned whether sidelining Andre Russell from a regular all-rounder role was a strategic mistake. He argued that Russell, even in the latter stages of his career, still offers greater match impact than the Rs 25 crore signing Cameron Green, especially in high-pressure situations.

The debate has intensified due to Green’s role in the playing XI. The Australian all-rounder has largely been used at No. 6, a position that does not fully utilise his strengths as a top-order batter. Historically, Green has thrived when given time to build innings, but in the lower middle order he has often been forced into rushed finishes.

This misalignment has reflected in his performances. Apart from a 32 not out and a bowling return of 1 for 28 against Lucknow Super Giants, Green has struggled for consistency, recording scores of 0, 4, 2, and 18 in other matches. His inability to influence games has added to KKR’s broader concerns in both batting depth and finishing ability.

In contrast, Russell’s long-standing role as a finisher and explosive all-rounder had previously defined KKR’s identity in the league. His ability to change games in a few overs with both bat and ball made him one of the franchise’s most valuable assets over the years.

The current struggles have also highlighted the absence of a proven finisher, with KKR experimenting with multiple batting combinations without finding stability. The lack of clarity in roles has further compounded their issues in closing out matches.

While the season is still in its early stages, Kaif’s comments underline a growing concern that KKR’s problems may be structural rather than form-based. The franchise now faces increasing pressure to reassess both its strategy and player utilisation as it looks to revive its IPL 2026 campaign.
