Indian patent filings hit record high in 2026

NEW DELHI

India’s innovation landscape has reached a historic milestone as patent filings soared to record levels this year.

New data reveals that 70 percent of all patent applications, nearly 100,000 filings, now come from Indian residents, rather than foreign companies.

This shift signals a major change in India’s identity, moving from a country that simply builds products for others to one that creates its own original, world-class ideas.

The government credits this boom to a massive push for intellectual property awareness. Under a national mission, over 25 lakh students and teachers have been trained on how to protect their inventions. To make the process easier, the government slashed patent filing fees by 80 percent for startups, small businesses, and schools. They also shortened the waiting time for examinations and prioritized applications from female inventors and government researchers, ensuring that more people can secure their rights quickly.

The growth is staggering. Just five years ago, domestic filings stood at roughly 24,000. That number has jumped by over 180 percent. Leading the way is Tamil Nadu, which recorded the highest number of filings this year, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal noted that these reforms have turned India into a global hub for commercially usable ideas. By simplifying rules and making digital filing mandatory, India has removed the red tape that previously held back local inventors. As more Indian citizens protect their work, the country is solidifying its position as a leader in global technology and creative innovation.
