NAIROBI
Just a month after a heartbreaking Asian Cup exit, the Indian women’s football team is ready to lace up their boots again. The Blue Tigresses face hosts Kenya at the Nyayo National Stadium, marking the start of the FIFA Series 2026. This historic match is the first time the senior women’s team has ever competed on African soil.
Head coach Crispin Chettri is using this tournament to look toward the future. With an eye on the 2031 World Cup qualifiers, Chettri has brought a youthful squad with an average age of just 22.8 years. “The idea is to start building now,” Chettri explained, noting that the team wants to expand its pool of competitive players.
Several veteran stars, including forward Grace Dangmei and goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu, are absent due to injuries or rest. This opens the door for rising talents like Jasoda Munda and Malavika P to prove they belong on the big stage. Chettri also encouraged star attacker Manisha to remain with her club in Peru to focus on her professional development.
The challenge will be a physical one. While Kenya is ranked lower than India, their players are known for their speed and strength. Chettri views this as a vital test ahead of the SAFF Women’s Championship in Goa next month. A win today could set up a dream final against powerhouse Australia, giving India’s “Young Tigresses” the perfect platform to grow.
