Spanish tactician set to take charge as club eyes long-term success
Bengaluru
Bengaluru FC have appointed Spanish coach Pep Munoz as their new head coach midway through the Indian Super League 2026 season, signalling a strategic shift towards long-term development despite a competitive campaign under way.
The 46-year-old, who previously worked with the famed FC Barcelona academy setup, is expected to replace current manager Renedy Singh soon, with formalities for his arrival currently being completed. Munoz could take charge as early as Bengaluru FC’s away fixture against FC Goa on April 4.
Renedy Singh, who stepped in as head coach following the departure of Gerard Zaragoza last November, will continue with the club in a different role. Under his guidance, Bengaluru FC had revived their title hopes, recently securing a 3-1 win over Inter Kashi to move within three points of league leaders Mumbai City FC.
The decision to bring in Munoz comes at a crucial juncture, with multiple teams—including Mohun Bagan, Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal—firmly in the title race. However, sources indicate that the club’s management is focused on building a sustainable future rather than short-term gains.
Munoz arrives with a strong résumé in Asian football, having enjoyed significant success with PKR Svay Rieng, where he won consecutive Cambodian Premier League titles. He also guided the team to victories in the Hun Sen Cup and Cambodian Super Cup, while reaching the final of the AFC Challenge League in 2025.
His earlier experience includes working with Barcelona’s youth teams during their UEFA Youth League-winning campaign in 2013–14. He later moved to China, taking up coaching roles with Qingdao Huanghai and Shandong Luneng Taishan, before serving as an assistant coach with the Chinese national team.
Munoz’s appointment makes him Bengaluru FC’s sixth foreign and fourth Spanish head coach. With his blend of youth development expertise and Asian football experience, the club will hope he can guide them to sustained success in the seasons ahead.
