India captain rewarded after prolific performances across Test and ODI formats
New Delhi
India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is set to be named the Cricketer of the Year at the annual awards ceremony organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), scheduled to be held in New Delhi on March 15.
The 26-year-old batter, who was not part of India’s squad that successfully defended the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title last month, delivered a remarkable run of performances in the longer formats of the game over the past year.
Gill enjoyed an outstanding Test season, amassing 983 runs at an average exceeding 70. A significant portion of those runs came during India’s hard-fought away series against the England national cricket team in 2025, where he scored a remarkable 754 runs in a closely contested series that ended in a draw.
In the One-Day International format, Gill also played a key role in India’s success, scoring 490 runs during the year. His contributions included a vital 188 runs in India’s triumphant campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy, helping the team secure another major international title.
Across formats, Gill accumulated an impressive total of 1,764 runs, averaging nearly 49. His tally included seven centuries and three half-centuries, underlining his growing stature as one of the leading batters in world cricket.
Although his form in T20 Internationals was relatively modest, Gill displayed exceptional consistency in franchise cricket. Representing the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, he scored 650 runs at an average of 50, finishing among the tournament’s top performers.
The annual BCCI awards ceremony will also recognise other major contributors to Indian cricket. Former India head coach Rahul Dravid is set to receive the prestigious Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for his immense contribution to the game, including guiding India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Cricket Association is expected to be honoured as the Best Association in domestic cricket for its consistent performance and contribution to the sport’s development.
Gill’s recognition at the BCCI gala marks another milestone in the young captain’s rapidly rising career, reflecting his impact across formats and his growing importance in India’s cricketing future.
