Lamichhane becomes RSP’s Central President, while Shah leads its parliamentary party and contests as the prime ministerial candidate, marking his national leadership transition

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has been named the Rastriya Swatantra Party’s (RSP) candidate for Nepal’s next Prime Minister ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. The announcement follows a seven-point agreement between Shah and RSP President Rabi Lamichhane, aimed at uniting the party and sharing leadership roles.
Under the deal, Lamichhane will serve as Central President of the RSP, while Shah will lead the parliamentary party and contest as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. The agreement marks a significant step for Shah, transitioning from city mayor to a potential national leader.
Both leaders emphasized political unity and reforms, aiming to strengthen the RSP’s position against established parties. Shah, an architect and rapper by profession, has gained popularity among young voters for his infrastructure initiatives and outspoken stance against corruption. Lamichhane, a former media personality, also enjoys a strong youth following and has been working to bring together Gen Z leaders and new political forces.
The agreement ensures that the party will retain its name, flag, and election symbol, with the central office remaining in the Kathmandu Valley. Party responsibilities will be assigned by integrating youth activists and experienced experts, based on inclusiveness, qualifications, and public image.
Both leaders also committed to implementing deep policy, institutional, and structural reforms to achieve national objectives, aiming for economic and social advancement and transforming Nepal into a respected middle-income nation within the next decade. Political analysts believe this alliance could challenge the dominance of established parties and reshape Nepal’s political landscape ahead of the elections.
