Australia tightens hate speech laws after Beach shooting

Australia introduces stricter hate speech laws after a deadly Bondi Beach attack, with harsher penalties, federal offenses, and a registry targeting leaders promoting racial hatred

Sydney

Australia has announced new and stricter hate speech laws following a deadly attack at Bondi Beach that killed 15 Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah. The attack, reportedly inspired by the Islamic State, has prompted urgent action from the government to prevent similar tragedies.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese outlined measures including harsher penalties for preachers or leaders promoting violence, and making hate an aggravating factor in crimes such as online threats and harassment. New federal offenses will address serious racial vilification and advocacy of racial supremacy. Albanese also revealed plans to create a registry of organizations whose leaders spread hate.

The government is under intense pressure over rising antisemitism, which critics say contributed to the attack. “Every Jewish Australian has the right to feel safe, valued, and respected,” Albanese said during an interfaith memorial service. Authorities will also gain powers to cancel or reject visas for individuals who promote hate.

A 12-month education taskforce led by business leader David Gonski will work to ensure schools address and prevent antisemitism. Special Envoy Jillian Segal called the measures “an important next step” in a long-planned response to growing hate threats.

The surviving gunman, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, has been charged with 59 offenses, including murder and terrorism. His 50-year-old father was killed in the shootout. Investigators found Islamic State flags in the vehicle registered to the attackers, who had recently traveled to the Philippines. Authorities are continuing searches and investigations both domestically and internationally.

New South Wales Parliament will also review tougher gun laws. Albanese stressed careful consultation to ensure broad parliamentary support. Meanwhile, 17 victims remain hospitalized, as the nation mourns the lives lost and seeks to prevent future attacks.
