Jamil Maqsood, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP), described Pakistan as a sinking Titanic, with the people of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) no longer willing to go down with it. Speaking at the 60th UNHRC session, he blamed rampant corruption, nepotism, and denial of basic services for sparking violent protests in PoJK. Maqsood explained that the region suffers from poor health, education, and job opportunities, as it is flooded with fake and low-quality goods from Pakistan.
He said the youth are demanding a united Jammu and Kashmir and refuse to have their local identity destroyed or merged into Pakistan. The unrest in PoJK has led to violent clashes with security forces, leaving at least 10 dead and many injured. In response, Pakistan’s Prime Minister sent a ministerial committee to Muzaffarabad for talks with protest leaders. The government has also imposed a communications blackout, cutting off mobile and internet services.
Maqsood called Pakistan a “rogue state” that oppresses people across Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and PoJK. He said people in these areas want to reunite with the former state of Jammu and Kashmir and resist Pakistan’s forceful attempts to silence them. Maqsood accused Pakistan of trying to erase PoJK’s identity by merging it with nearby districts like Abbottabad and Murree. He also raised concerns about militancy, warning that PoJK has become a base for terror groups and that locals refuse to be used as scapegoats for Pakistan’s proxy wars.
