India’s Haney misses medal, world records tumble

New Delhi

India’s 19-year-old debutant Haney endured heartbreak in the men’s Discus Throw F37 final at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025, narrowly missing out on a medal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Haney began strongly, leading after the first round with a throw of 51.22m. However, he failed to improve on that mark. Mexico’s Luis Carlos Lopez claimed gold with a championship record of 56.59m, while Ukraine’s Mykola Zhabnyak moved ahead with 52.70m. In the final round, Japan’s Yamato Shimbo stunned the field with a personal best of 54.50m to secure silver, pushing Haney down to fourth. Under pressure, the young Indian managed just 46.34m on his last attempt.

Elsewhere, two world records lit up the championships. Iran’s Saeid Afrooz set a new mark in the men’s Javelin Throw F34 with 41.52m, surpassing his previous record of 41.16m. Algeria’s Safia Djelal also bettered her own record in the women’s Shot Put F57, registering 11.67m. With these efforts, the tally of world records in New Delhi rose to 21, alongside 65 new championship records.

China’s Jin Hua briefly raised hopes of overtaking Brazil in the medal standings with a championship record in the 1500m T54. But Brazil sealed their dominance as Bartolomeu da Silva won the men’s 400m T37 in 50.13 seconds and Maria C A da Silva clinched the women’s 400m T47 in 56.17 seconds.

Brazil remain on top with 10 golds, while India sit fourth with four gold, four silver, and one bronze.
