West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against India due to injury. In his place, uncapped pace-bowling all-rounder Johann Layne has been named as a replacement, Cricket West Indies announced.
Joseph, who has taken 51 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 21.66, was expected to lead the West Indies pace attack. His injury will be assessed again before the team’s Bangladesh tour starting October 18.
Johann Layne, 23, brings promising form to the squad with 66 first-class wickets in 19 matches at an average of 22.28. He has also scored 495 runs. He will debut in Indian conditions, traditionally known to favour spin bowling.
To boost their batting, Alick Athanaze and Tagenarine Chanderpaul return to the squad, chosen for their skills against spin.
West Indies’ bowling unit includes Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip, and Justin Greaves. The spin attack will feature Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, and skipper Roston Chase.
The India vs West Indies Test series ends on October 14, after which the Windies head to Bangladesh for ODIs and T20Is.
Layne’s performance could be a key factor for the visitors.
