Protesters attacked Singha Durbar, set fires, curfews imposed, airport closed
New Delhi
Air India on Tuesday cancelled multiple flights on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route as violent protests continued across Nepal for a second day. The affected flights—AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218, and AI211/212—will not operate. An Air India spokesperson said the airline is monitoring the situation closely and prioritises passenger and crew safety.
The cancellations follow unrest triggered by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, confirmed by his secretariat. The protests, led mainly by Nepal’s youth, intensified after allegations of government corruption and a brief social media ban. Clashes on Monday resulted in at least 19 deaths and hundreds of injuries in Kathmandu and nearby towns, with demonstrators targeting government offices, party headquarters, and the prime minister’s residence.
Protesters stormed the Singha Durbar complex, the hub of Nepal’s central administration, breaching its western gate. Curfews have been imposed in key areas of the capital, and the Nepali Army is deployed at Tribhuvan International Airport, which remains closed. Demonstrators set fire to political offices and residences, including those of the Nepali Congress President and ministers like Prithvi Subba Gurung, while also attacking homes of former leaders. Police used tear gas to disperse crowds, and reports indicated some bullet injuries despite orders for restraint.
The Gen Z-led protests have highlighted widespread anger over perceived corruption and the government’s handling of social and political issues. With escalating unrest, Air India has suspended operations on the Delhi-Kathmandu route to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, while authorities continue efforts to restore order across the country.
