Myanmar announces first election phase for December

Yangon

Myanmar will hold the first phase of its general elections on December 28, the Union Election Commission announced on Monday. Officials said the polls will be conducted in phases, with later dates to be shared soon. The decision comes after the military-backed government ended the state of emergency in July to allow elections.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing had earlier confirmed that elections would take place between December this year and January 2026. Last month, the National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) reshaped the political structure by forming a new union government and the State Security and Peace Commission. The new government is led by Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, while Min Aung Hlaing chairs the security commission.

The NDSC also cancelled the order that transferred sovereign power to the military commander, a move first taken after the February 2021 coup. At that time, Acting President U Myint Swe had declared a state of emergency, handing power to Min Aung Hlaing and creating the State Administration Council. That emergency was repeatedly extended until July 31 this year.

Authorities say the elections are aimed at restoring multi-party democracy, though critics remain doubtful about their fairness. The political climate remains tense after years of military control and resistance movements.

Meanwhile, Myanmar is also focusing on its digital future. The government is implementing the Myanmar Digital Economy Roadmap 2030. At a recent meeting, Communications Minister General Mya Tun Oo stressed that digital growth is vital for development. He cited global data showing the digital economy could rise to over 25 percent of GDP by 2030.
