The police announced on Monday that they have apprehended an individual who made a false bomb threat to a mosque in the communally sensitive area of Shivaji Nagar. The arrested suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Syed Mohammad Anwar, hailing from Maharashtra. According to authorities, the accused had been collecting donations from mosques for madrasas. After collecting donations from Azam Masjid near Russell Market in Shivaji Nagar, Bengaluru, he requested to spend the night at the mosque. However, his request was denied, which led to his offense. Subsequently, Anwar boarded a bus to Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. While the bus was passing through Devanahalli, Anwar made a call to the emergency helpline number 122 and falsely claimed that terrorists had planted a bomb in the mosque.
The incident occurred late at night on July 5, causing anxiety and tension among the local residents and police. A search operation was conducted promptly, involving officials from the fire and emergency services, police department, bomb disposal squad, and dog squad. However, the search revealed that the bomb threat was a hoax.
The Shivaji Nagar police registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested the accused while he was en route from Kurnool to Mehbubnagar. Further investigation uncovered that the suspect is a B.Sc graduate who is currently unemployed. It was discovered that he had been making a living by masquerading as a collector of donations for madrasas. Ongoing investigations are being conducted into the matter to gather more information.
