700-gram premature baby with heart, brain, lung, intestine and blood vessel issues gets a new lease of life at Rainbow Children’s Hospital

A premature baby who was weighing just 700 grams with heart, lung, brain and blood vessel ailments has been given a new lease of life by a team of Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Marathalli. Medically, it is said to be one of the most challenging cases.

Speaking to the media, Dr Babu S Madarkar (Senior Consultant Neonatologist) said, “Around four months back, a tiny baby was rushed to our hospital. For parents, it was a difficult time as this baby was born after many years of marriage and four abortions previously. The parents were emotionally and physically distressed at that moment. When the baby was born early in the seventh month, he weighed just a kilogram. However, as the days passed by, the weight reduced to 700 grams. The baby had to undergo a lot of obstacles and hurdles on a daily basis.”

Baby’s lungs were immature, so the baby was given artificial breathing support with ventilator for many days. The baby’s heart was not pumping enough and hence the doctors had to provide artificial medication. There was a blood infection and it was quite difficult to diagnose. The tiny fragile blood vessels in the brain were at risk of bleeding out while the intestines were not working at all. As a result, the digesting capacity had been affected. The doctors had to try different types of milk to keep the baby alive; from donor’s milk to lactose milk.

Finally, after 120 days of treatment, the baby has been discharged now and is doing fine. Speaking to the media, the baby’s father said, “I thank the doctors for saving the baby.” The baby’s mother was short of words for appreciating the medical team. “We were given the best treatment despite a lot of hurdles. We were treated very well. Now, I am happy that my baby is doing well.”
