Ahead of the assembly elections, officials along with police have seized valuables, including gold, worth crores that were being transported without proper documents in the district.
Police seized gold items worth Rs 2.6 crore at a checkpost in Tarikere town. The valuables were being transported to Chikkamagaluru in a four-wheeler. As the transporters failed to provide proper documents, the gold was seized, authorities said.
Deputy Commissioner KN Ramesh said the parties are yet to submit all the documents. As per the bill, they are worth Rs 2.6 crore, but the exact value will be ascertained only after physical verification of the items, he said.
Officials have also seized over 900 sarees and pressure cookers in Chikkamagaluru and Sringeri assembly segments. Although the invoice is available for 1,000 sarees, the address and the contact number of the buyer is not clear, and thus the goods were seized and an FIR has been registered, officials said.
Meanwhile, the Commercial Taxes Department has served a notice to the supplier of the sarees. The goods were supplied from Surat, an official said. Officials have also seized pressure cookers and over 200 sarees in the Sringeri segment.
