Alia Bhatt’s highly anticipated action film, Alpha, carried massive excitement before its release as the historic first female-led project in the famous YRF Spy Universe. However, the film has opened to mixed reactions from both movie critics and audiences, and this lukewarm response seems to have taken a toll on its initial box-office numbers.
According to reports, Alpha collected around nine crore rupees net across India on its opening day. While a nine-crore opening is still a respectable figure for a female-centric action movie, industry experts were expecting a much bigger start. This is especially true considering the massive scale of the project and the powerful backing of the Yash Raj Films brand.
Reports also suggest that theater occupancy levels fluctuated heavily throughout. This makes the remaining weekend absolutely crucial for the film’s long-term survival at the box office. With a staggering reported investment and recovery target set around the two-hundred-and-fifty-crore range, the movie cannot afford to slide downward.
Alpha now desperately needs to show strong growth over the weekend, followed by a very steady theatrical run, to emerge as a profitable and successful venture. Filmmakers are hoping that mass audiences will still flock to theaters for the high-octane stunts. The next few days will officially decide whether Alia’s spy thriller can overcome the negative reviews and secure a winning streak at the ticket windows.
