Proteas will bounce back stronger, vows coach Mashimbyi

LONDON

South Africa’s women’s cricket coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, promises his team will return stronger after their tough T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England.

The Proteas were knocked out at The Oval after England grabbed a solid 40-run win to secure a spot in the grand finale against Australia. South Africa started the match well, quickly dismissing three key England batters. However, a massive partnership between Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight turned the game around.

Instead of feeling defeated, Mashimbyi is focusing on the lessons learned. He explained that the team now knows exactly where they need to improve. The plan is to fix these gaps so they can truly dominate in future global tournaments.

Despite missing out on the final, South Africa had many bright spots. Batter Tazmin Brits led the scoring with 225 runs. Meanwhile, experienced star bowlers Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail each took eight wickets. Ismail had even come out of retirement just to play in this tournament. Mashimbyi hopes the veteran bowler will decide to stay on with the squad.

Looking back, the coach admitted their bowling style was too similar, making it easy for England to predict their moves. He emphasized that the main goal now is to build a more varied attack and develop new talent. Mashimbyi believes this World Cup heartbreak gives the Proteas a clear roadmap to become a much bigger threat in the future.
