MANGALORE
A shocking case involving a 17-year-old girl has drawn attention in Mangalore after she died by suicide at her home earlier this year. Police said the teenager was pregnant and left behind a note before her death.
According to investigators, the girl took the extreme step on April 23. In the note, addressed to her parents, she reportedly wrote that she had made a mistake and that the young man linked to the case was happy now. She also claimed that some people associated with Hindu organisations had not supported her during her difficulties.
The girl’s parents later approached Suratkal police and filed a written complaint. They alleged that a young man was responsible for their daughter’s pregnancy and played a direct role in the circumstances that led to her death. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the POCSO Act, along with charges related to rape and abetment of suicide.
Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy said investigators have begun a detailed probe. A post-mortem examination has been completed and doctors have collected a fetal sample for DNA testing to help establish key facts in the case.
Officials said the main accused is currently absconding and efforts are underway to locate him. A special police team has been formed to track his movements and make an arrest. The case has sparked concern across the region and renewed discussions about the safety, support and legal protection available to minors.
