Sharavathi Hydro Project Sparks Environmental ConcernsHonnavar

Large-scale development projects in India often face opposition today due to environmental concerns and growing public awareness of ecological impacts. The Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydro Electricity Project at Linganamakki in Shivamogga and Uttara Kannada is a clear example.

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) is moving forward with the proposed 2,000 MW project, billed as the country’s largest pumped storage hydro project. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved it. KPCL claims that forest damage will be limited, but locals and environmental groups are protesting.

Organisations like Nimma Sharavathi (Nadi Kanive) Ulisi Horata Samithi are running awareness campaigns, saying, We must protect the Sharavathi river and its evergreen forests. Sustainable development and alternative energy sources are vital to prevent landslides and preserve the ecosystem for future generations.

Ecologists have expressed serious concerns. Dr. Amit Hegde from the Centre for Wildlife Studies highlighted the unique amphibian and reptile diversity in the Sharavathi Valley, urging authorities to reconsider the project to protect these habitats. H.N. Kumara of the Salim Ali Centre warned that the project would further fragment the Lion-Tailed Macaque population, already affected by earlier dams and human settlements.

KPCL, however, says the project plan has been revised to reduce forest loss. Only 150 acres of forest will be cleared, impacting around 15,000 trees instead of 1 lakh. Most components of the underground project will use existing dams and the powerhouse complex, avoiding damage to the forest except for 20.28 hectares at the tunnel entrance.

While KPCL emphasizes minimal environmental impact, the debate continues, highlighting the challenge of balancing energy development with the preservation of the Western Ghats’ unique biodiversity.
