Filmmaker and actor Jon Favreau has said he was initially against the decision to kill Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, but later realised the choice was right. Favreau, who played a key role in launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man, admitted he had concerns when directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo planned the storyline.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Favreau said he feared audiences, especially those who grew up watching Tony Stark, might find the ending too emotional. However, after watching the final film, he praised how the scene was handled with care and strong storytelling. He said the performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow added depth and made the moment more powerful. Favreau admitted that he was wrong in his earlier opinion and said the scene left him emotional.
He also revealed that despite Tony Stark’s death, Downey is expected to return to the Marvel universe in a new role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. Favreau said he is excited to see how this new character will be presented on screen.
Apart from Marvel, Favreau is currently promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu, part of the expanding Star Wars universe. He spoke about the challenges of bringing a television story to the big screen, saying it requires higher production quality, bigger sets, IMAX-style visuals, and advanced effects.
Favreau also reflected on his long journey with Star Wars, saying the upcoming project may mark the end of his seven-year association with the franchise. He noted that both Marvel and Star Wars fans are deeply passionate, adding that Star Wars has a longer cultural history dating back to its 1977 debut.
