Rahane Under Fire as KKR Struggle Deepens in IPL 2026

New Delhi

Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves in troubled waters in IPL 2026, with captain Ajinkya Rahane facing mounting scrutiny over both his batting form and leadership amid a disappointing campaign.

At 37, Rahane’s place in the playing XI has increasingly come under question, particularly given the evolving demands of T20 cricket. Known for his classical style, the veteran batter has struggled to adapt to the aggressive, high-tempo approach that now defines the format. In five matches, Rahane has managed just seven sixes and eight boundaries—numbers that fall well short of expectations for a top-order batter.

Modern T20 cricket has been redefined by explosive players such as Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, with emerging talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi further pushing the boundaries. In contrast, Rahane’s strike rate, hovering below 150, reflects a more traditional approach that appears increasingly outdated in today’s game.

Beyond his batting, questions are also being raised about his captaincy. KKR have looked disjointed in several outings, lacking clarity in strategy and execution. Yet, despite the criticism, the franchise faces a dilemma—there are limited alternatives within the squad to take over leadership.

Vice-captain Rinku Singh is also enduring a lean patch, making it difficult for the management to hand him additional responsibility. The only other viable leadership option appears to be Rovman Powell, who has prior experience captaining West Indies in white-ball formats, though his record remains modest.

Adding to KKR’s concerns is the lack of impactful starts in the powerplay, despite promising contributions from young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, currently the team’s leading run-scorer. The overall team composition has also come under scrutiny, with critics pointing to a lack of quality Indian bench strength.

With few immediate solutions available, KKR’s campaign appears to be at a crossroads. Unless there is a swift turnaround in both leadership and performance, the franchise risks seeing its IPL 2026 hopes slip further away.
