US Cong fails to resolve funding standoff, raising travel disruption concerns

New York
A prolonged funding standoff in the United States Congress remained unresolved, disrupting airport operations and halting paychecks for thousands of federal workers, as concerns grow over travel delays during the busy spring-break season.

Despite a day of intense legislative negotiations, lawmakers failed to break a six-week deadlock centered on disagreements over immigration enforcement policies. The impasse has directly impacted nearly 270,000 employees of the Department of Homeland Security, many of whom have been working without pay since mid-February.

The situation has begun to affect critical infrastructure, particularly airport operations, where staffing shortages and uncertainty have raised alarms about potential delays and disruptions for travelers. With spring-break travel increasing passenger volumes, officials warn that continued inaction could exacerbate the situation further.

Earlier in the day, the United States Senate unanimously passed a bill aimed at restoring funding for most DHS functions while addressing the immigration dispute that triggered the crisis. However, the measure failed to advance sufficiently to resolve the broader impasse, leaving federal agencies in limbo.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the White House announced that Donald Trump had declared an emergency measure. This move is expected to allow airport security personnel to resume receiving pay as early as Monday, providing some immediate relief to a key segment of the affected workforce.

However, many other DHS employees, including those responsible for emergency response operations and coastal defense, are set to remain unpaid. The situation is further complicated by lawmakers preparing to leave Washington for a scheduled two-week recess, delaying any immediate resolution.

The continued gridlock highlights deep political divisions over immigration policy and raises broader concerns about the impact of legislative stalemates on essential government services. As uncertainty persists, both federal workers and the traveling public face the prospect of ongoing disruption and financial strain.
