Andaman forest staff get underwater graduation ceremony

SRI VIJAYA PURAM, India

In a breathtaking first for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, local forest officials took the plunge to receive their professional certifications in the heart of the ocean. This week, frontline staff traded the traditional podium for coral reefs, marking a historic milestone in marine conservation training by holding their graduation ceremony entirely underwater.

The event concluded an intensive week-long scuba diving and reef monitoring program under the National Coastal Mission. To emphasize the “immersive” nature of the training, Sanjay Kumar Sinha, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, dived alongside the participants to hand over their certificates beneath the waves. This symbolic gesture was designed to highlight the deep connection between the staff and the fragile ecosystems they are sworn to protect.

Fourteen dedicated participants underwent rigorous training that included underwater navigation and coral health assessment. By learning to document marine species and monitor threats like coral bleaching firsthand, these rangers are now better equipped to manage the islands’ vast biological treasures. The program bridges the gap between classroom theory and the real-world challenges of the deep sea.

Following the underwater event, a formal valedictory function was held at the Marine National Park Interpretation Centre. Senior officials praised the initiative as a pioneering step toward experiential learning. By turning conservationists into skilled divers, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have positioned themselves as leaders in innovative environmental protection, ensuring that those who guard the sea truly understand its secrets from the inside out.
