Dion Nash quits over New Cricket league

NEW DELHI
Former Black Caps star Dion Nash has resigned from the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board following a major disagreement over the future of the sport. His departure came shortly after the board voted to move forward with a new franchise-style tournament called “NZ20” instead of joining Australia’s Big Bash League.
The decision marks a massive shift for New Zealand’s domestic cricket. For months, leaders were torn between two paths: starting their own private league to attract global investors or placing a New Zealand team in the established Australian competition. While some officials believed joining the Big Bash was the safer bet, the board ultimately gave “in-principle” support to the NZ20 model.
Nash, who joined the board in 2024, admitted he could no longer support the direction the leadership was taking. “I reached a point where I felt it was the right time to step aside,” he stated, highlighting a growing rift within the organization. He is not the first to leave; former chief executive Scott Weenink resigned last December, also citing differences over this exact strategy.
NZC Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon thanked Nash for his service but clarified that the NZ20 plan is not yet final. The board still needs to settle complex commercial and legal details before the league becomes a reality. As the sport looks for new funding, the exit of a respected figure like Nash shows just how much is at stake for the future of the game.
