Vote with integrity to strengthen democracy: T’gana Guv

Blurb: He appealed to citizens to vote responsibly, stressing awareness as the foundation of democracy.

Hyderabad
Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Sunday called upon citizens to actively and responsibly exercise their right to vote, asserting that democratic institutions remain strong only when voters participate with awareness, integrity and a sense of civic duty. He was addressing the state-level celebrations of the 16th National Voters’ Day, held to underline the importance of informed and ethical participation in the democratic process.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the theme of this year’s National Voters’ Day, My India, My Vote, aptly reflected the core principle of Indian democracy, that citizens are central to governance and decision-making. National Voters’ Day is observed annually on January 25 to mark the establishment of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Referring to Article 324 of the Constitution, Governor Varma said the independence and impartiality of the ECI are vital to ensuring free and fair elections in a vast, diverse and populous country like India. He emphasised that strong constitutional institutions play a crucial role in preserving public faith in the electoral system.

Quoting B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, the Governor noted that political democracy can endure only when it is supported by social democracy and ethical participation by voters. He said informed voting, respect for democratic values and social harmony are essential for the long-term health of the republic.

Governor Varma also praised Telangana’s election administration for promoting inclusiveness and transparency through several voter-friendly initiatives. These include assured minimum facilities at polling stations, home voting for eligible voters such as senior citizens and persons with disabilities, and the effective use of modern technology to improve electoral management.

He lauded officials for the peaceful and efficient conduct of the Jubilee Hills Assembly bye-election, highlighting the coordinated deployment of police personnel and the use of drone surveillance to maintain law and order on polling day. Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana C Sudharsan Reddy briefed the gathering on voter enrolment and electoral preparedness in the state.
