Solid Waste Management Implementation at KSR: Target of 40 tonnes of fertilizer

Must read

Solid waste management has been effectively undertaken as part of the eco-friendly initiative of the South Western Railways. The BBMP classifies the railways as a large producer and sets guidelines for the large producers for waste disposal. The division manages two types of waste, including biodegradable waste generated by railway colony homes, local solid waste generated by road sweeps, and railway hospitals and health units.

This section contains the Municipal Waste Management Agreement for Municipal Waste Disposal. There are 826 buses in Bangalore City Railway, 460 in Bangalore Cantonment and 300 Residential Houses in Yeshwanthpur. The garbage collected from these lodges is placed in three different bins in automated carriers and transported to the garbage processing center.

Waste to the Vermi Compost Center: Dry waste is classified as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Wet waste and biodegradable waste are further processed and sent to the vermi compost center in the colonies. Non-biodegradable waste is handed over to authorized BBMP empaneled dry waste collectors.

The Bangalore composting plant processes about 40 tonnes of fertilizer per month. Currently, fertilizer is being supplied to outside agencies. There is also a proposal to supply manure to the residents of the colonies.

Compost fertilizer preparation: In the process of compost preparation, the sewage waste is moistened with water. Cow dung is cast on the waste. Its mixture is given in turns for three to four weeks, five days a week. Half a kg of earthworms (Endrilus eugenia, Eisenia fetida, Peronix excavates) are placed in bins.

When the earthworms move downstream they begin to eat the waste mixture. The final compost product is being collected after 45 to 60 days. Biomedical waste is segregated at the source according to the guidelines and handed over to the general biomedical waste facility.
