Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi held detailed talks on clearing long-pending issues slowing Rourkela Steel Plant’s major expansion plan and other key development projects

Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan on Wednesday and held detailed discussions on long-pending issues related to the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant in Sundargarh district. The plant, operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is set for a major upgrade under its proposed 9.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) expansion plan.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kumaraswamy described the discussion as “lengthy and fruitful”. He said several issues had remained unresolved for many years, especially those connected to land acquisition. The Chief Minister, he added, assured quick action to clear these hurdles. According to the Union Minister, a committee formed after earlier talks in Delhi has already begun working on settling all outstanding concerns.

Kumaraswamy praised the Chief Minister’s proactive approach and said most issues were now moving toward closure. He stressed that Odisha would play a key role in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of increasing national steel production. The expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant, along with rising contributions from private steel makers, would significantly strengthen India’s overall steel capacity, he said. The Centre, he added, remained committed to supporting both public and private sector units.

The Chief Minister’s Office said discussions focused on smooth land acquisition for the plant’s expansion. Majhi called the project vital for growth and jobs. A committee will address pending issues, while talks also covered land for Rourkela’s proposed airport.
