Chennai
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) is likely to issue a red alert for the Delta districts of Tamil Nadu on November 28 and 29 due to heavy rainfall. This follows a forecast of heavy to very heavy rain across several districts starting Wednesday. On Monday, an orange alert was issued for Chennai, Karaikal, and Puducherry in anticipation of the downpours.
The weather system causing the rain is a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a deep depression. As it moves northwestward, the Delta districts are expected to receive significant rainfall. The RMC has warned fishermen to avoid deep-sea fishing between November 25 and 28 due to this system.
A low-pressure area that formed over the East Equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is also contributing to the heavy rain. The system, influenced by upper-air circulation, is expected to strengthen as it moves towards the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coast, bringing rain to Chennai on November 27 and 28.
Orange alerts have been issued for heavy rain in districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, while yellow alerts are in place for other areas like Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, and Kancheepuram. The weather department has urged the public to be prepared for severe conditions.
