Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Rome to discuss strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The meeting took place before the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where India is a guest country.
Jaishankar highlighted the “steady momentum” in relations between India and the UK, emphasizing cooperation in areas like technology, green energy, trade, and mobility. Both leaders also discussed regional developments in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.
This meeting followed a recent discussion between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where they pledged to enhance ties between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi had described the meeting as “extremely productive,” noting the priority of strengthening partnerships in areas like technology, security, and trade.
Jaishankar, who also inaugurated the new Indian Chancery in Rome, is in Italy for a three-day visit to attend the Outreach session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Additionally, he will participate in the MED Mediterranean Dialogue, engaging with leaders from across the Mediterranean region.
The G7 discussions will focus on key issues such as the stability of the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East, including the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Jaishankar is expected to hold further bilateral talks with counterparts from Italy and other participating countries.
