New Delhi
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced the re-launch of the senior citizen pension scheme by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, despite challenges from the Central government. The scheme, first introduced by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, offers financial assistance to residents aged 60 and above.
Bharadwaj highlighted the scheme’s importance, stating, “This is a significant day for Delhi’s elderly. The pension scheme, halted in the past, has been revived under Kejriwal’s leadership.” The re-launch includes 80,000 new slots to meet high demand, with over 10,000 applications received on the first day.
Under the scheme, seniors aged 60-69 will receive ₹2,000 per month, while those aged 70 and above will get ₹2,500. Additional benefits are available for applicants from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority communities.
The pension program has been a contentious issue in Delhi politics. Earlier, the BJP criticized the AAP government for not expanding the scheme since 2018. In response, AAP accused the Central government of delaying its financial contribution, which was resolved after persistent efforts.
As the 2025 Assembly elections approach, Kejriwal urged voters to support AAP again, pledging to complete all pending projects in the next term.
