The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Primary Government School in Gattigaru, located in Sullia taluk’s Nelluru Kemraje village, is facing serious structural issues, with the school building’s roof near collapse. Due to this, students are currently studying in a temporary classroom set up in the school’s auditorium, where conditions have become challenging due to high temperatures.
Though local MLA Bhagirathi Murulya visited the school and assured corrective action, repairs have not yet begun. Previously, students were given shelter under tarpaulin covers during the rainy season but are now struggling with excessive heat in their temporary setup.
The School Development and Management Committee (SDMC), along with teachers and parents, have repeatedly urged authorities to repair the roof. Requests have been raised in every gram panchayat meeting, but no response has been received. The situation worsened this monsoon as the building began to lean, and the roof further deteriorated, prompting the relocation of students to the open auditorium and a nearby anganwadi. Makeshift arrangements were made with tarpaulins for seating.
Local representatives and government officials have been urged to take immediate action to ensure safe classrooms for the students. The president of Nellur Kemraje gram panchayat, Dhananjay Kumar Kotemale, stated that although the MLA pledged repairs, the school’s name was left out of the repair proposal list. Another request has been submitted, and authorities have promised to address the issue promptly.
