Australia’s bowling coach Daniel Vettori will miss part of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India, starting Nov 22 in Perth, to attend the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah. The auction will take place on Nov 24 and 25, where Vettori will represent Sunrisers Hyderabad as their head coach.
A statement from the Australian team confirmed that Vettori would complete final preparations for the first Test before heading to Jeddah for the auction. He will rejoin the team for the remainder of the series. The statement also expressed full support for Vettori’s role with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Alongside Vettori, former Australia players Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are contracted with Channel Seven as commentators for the series, are also expected to miss part of the first Test to attend the auction in their roles as head coaches of Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, respectively.
Vettori, who has been Australia’s bowling coach since 2022, is also the head coach of Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred and has a prominent role in franchise cricket. During Australia’s practice session at WACA, he focused on preparing the batting unit to face Ravindra Jadeja while also working with the bowling squad.
In Vettori’s absence, former Australian cricketers Michael Hussey and Jim Allenby will support the team during the Perth Test. Fielding coach Andre Borovec and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will join the squad after their T20I duties against Pakistan.
